Chapter 8 of the skilful teacher Diversity is in the class is very common now a days, I have been fortunate to be in diverse setting most of my life, form the age of 7 when I came to Canada. The communities I have lived have always been very multi cultured and because of this I am not a stranger to this type of setting, which helps with my interactions with my student make up of today. With the different type of learners, learning styles, personalities, culture, race or even beliefs being an effective teacher is not that simple, you have to tune in to all of these differences and pay close attention how each difference encountered can aid or hinder your teaching efforts. How does diversity affect the class room? when students with different backgrounds, sets of experiences, cultures, race and world views come together in a learning environment, this would be defined as a diverse class. In a diverse class there are some similarities many differences, which can be a bit challenging for the educator if they do not acknowledge this diversity. Expectations and importance of the class rooms can differ amongst students as well as teachers. Assumptions can be made and communication may be distorted. Acknowledging and identifying these differences and how they affect the classroom allows them to see the class as a whole, as one class a unit and not many small units occupying a common space. How to promote a feeling of “one class” , a unit as a whole Common ground, this is a good start in team building, providing a platform for all. this is beneficial because it starts everyone in the class on the same page. “grouping students together who share a common curricular interest, or who are at the same ability level, allows them to learn without having to accommodate interests that are not their own” The Skilful Teacher (P183 ebook) Stephen D Brookfeild Setting expectations and learning goals is necessary for establishing a direction, to move towards the finish line. Addressing is just as important as recognizing difference in a diverse class. I would say every teachers goals is to have their class running like fine tuned machine, the challenges very from class to class. By being aware of and embracing these challenges with a positive outlook will allow you to be more open to the huge amount of insight from everyone who plays a role in this diverse world

THE 4 CORE ASSUMPTIONS
1-Skillful teaching is whatever helps students learn. 2-Skillful teachers adopt a critically reflective stance towards their practice. 3-The most important knowledge that skillful teachers need to do good work is a constant awareness of how students are experiencing their learning and perceiving teachers actions. 4-collage students of any age should be treated as adults. (Stephan D Brook field P53 The Skillful Teacher) reflection on these 4 points is very important, this allows us as educators to compare our core assumptions, if we have any in mind or trying to figure out what we can assume and practice by.my thoughts on these 4 core points by Stephan D Brook field . 1. This assumption is very true you can follow any method of teaching that you have been taught by the experts but if doesn't help your students learn and you notice this but don't correct it then its not skillful teaching 2.Reflection is very critical to progress and achieve your goals, to notice your strength and weaknesses and be more aware of your situations and experiences in order to improve and gain the right tools to reach your goals. "The] results reveal reflection to be a powerful mechanism behind learning, confirming the words of American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer John Dewey: “We do not learn from experience … we learn from reflecting on experience.” reflection-is-the-most-important-part-of-the-learning-process by Tanner Christensen 3. Being aware of your audience allows you to monitor the learning progress which may reflect greatly on your teaching practices and allow you to make adjustments to better suit the learning environment and be more effective with your teaching 4. Collage requires responsibility and maturity, and every college learner should have these traits and be expected to act like an adult. I feel if I adopt these core assumptions I can use them to help in my success of reaching my goals to be a skillful teacher. Thank you Glenn, I've wondered about this for a while now and now Know what I need for my capstone project.
